Local Earthquake Information

Germantown and the surrounding area lie in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The New Madrid Seismic Zone is famous for its strongest earthquake in 1812 which had an estimated magnitude of 8.0 and was felt in areas as far as New York City. This earthquake is currently the largest earthquake ever in the continental United States. Experts have predicted that an earthquake of at least 6.0 magnitude has a 90% chance of happening by 2040 in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.
